He watched the man every day since he arrived.

He was older than him by several years, probably around Gabriel’s age, but was a lot smaller and thinner. The man kept himself huddled in his room and hardly left, looking scared for his life every time he stepped out of his room to find a nurse or get some food.

The patients hated him. They called him a whore, a cheater, a pathetic waste of life that deserved to die, and cursed him every moment their eyes fell upon him. The stronger patients pushed him against walls, stole food from his tray, and if they were lucky, they were able to throw punches and kicks at him before any doctors would catch them.

Most of the doctors pitied him, but others were not so fond of him. They would ‘miss’ his vein when he needed a shot, leaving his arm bruised from the many needle punctures. The bandages would be wrapped far too tight around him, and another doctor would have to quickly undo it when his hand or leg became swollen and throbbing. One employee was caught spitting into the man’s orange juice. Unfortunately, the doctor who caught him gave him a pat on the shoulder and left him to deliver the tainted food.

It seemed as if only one patient cared for him.

Abel was a new patient, having arrived just a week ago and was a silent observer to Alfons’ life. When one patient snuck into his room to steal his bread, Abel walked in to hand a trembling Alfons a roll and a cookie. When a doctor ’forgot’ to change his sheets, Abel brought his over and helped Alfons replace them. He never spoke a word to Alfons, and always left quickly when Alfons tried to talk to him. It confused him, but it was nice to see a patient actually care about him.

It was night, and no one would be out to observe the attack. A patient shoved Alfons against the wall, glaring down at the whimpering man as three of his companions surrounded him.

“God damned coward.”

“Go kill yourself!”

“My brother died braver than how you survived!”

“You fucking whore.”

“P-please stop,” Alfons whispered, pressing his back against the wall while clamping his hands to his ears. He then yelped when one grabbed his wrists to pry his hands apart while another spat in his face. Alfons tried to protect himself, but he was still very weak and could not fight back.

One of the patients longed to break Alfons’ nose, and reared his fist back while the others held Alfons tightly. He aimed his fist down, only to be shoved out of the way by a young, angry looking man. “What are you-?”

He shoved and smacked the other men away before quickly wrapping his arms around Alfons, holding him protectively while giving the men an icy glare. “Step back,” one of the patients demanded. The young man shook his head, shielding Alfons from any oncoming attacks. “Step away, let us take the coward!”

“Shh, not so loud,” another hissed. “The nurses will hear you!” Sure enough, a light from down the hall flickered on and the door to the nurses’ office opened. They hesitated before quickly hurrying to their rooms, leaving Alfons and his protector alone in the hallway.

He looked up at the young man and squirmed, still stuck in his tight grip. This was the first time any patient protected him from harm. “Wh-why…?” he whispered, then winced to see tears rolling down the man’s eyes. “Wh-why did you do that?”

Fat tears rolled down his cheeks as he began to tremble. He then shook his head and buried his face into Alfons’ shoulder, muffling his sobs as the light in the office turned off and the door closed. “N-no,” the boy croaked as Alfons rubbed his back gently.

“No?” Alfons repeated.

“N-no fair,” he sniffled. “M-mean, th-they’re so m-mean to y-you.” He hiccupped and whimpered, knees buckling as both of them sunk down to the floor. “No more, n-no more mean. I-I don’t want y-you hurt no more. N-no more, I-I promise…”

Alfons blushed and felt tears come to his own eyes, moved by the boy’s stumbling words. He swallowed down the lump in his throat, holding the sobbing boy in his arms as he rocked him gently, back and forth like a mother with a child. “Thank you,” he whispered, tears trickling down his face as his chest began to swell at the thought of some hope still being in this world.

what you fail to realize is that video games shouldn’t cater to females in the first place. It’s largely known that it’s targeted towards the MALE demographic and has been for so many years, so why would they ask for something like that to be handed to them on a goddamn silver platter?
